Trump’s attempts at ‘peace’ in the middle east is naive.
Trump wants to be recognized as achieving PEACE in the middle East. Hamas want Jihad and the elimination of Israel as a state.
Hamas’s 1988 Covenant explicitly envisaged the elimination of Israel and contained overtly antisemitic language. Its 2017 political document moderated that rhetoric, distinguished opposition to Zionism from hostility toward Jews, and accepted a Palestinian state on the 1967 lines as a national-consensus position. However, Hamas did not recognize Israel, renounce armed resistance, or abandon its ultimate claim to all of historic Palestine. Nor did it formally repeal the 1988 Covenant. So, seeking a peace deal with Hamas including their disarmament is naive. Appointing amateur negotiators (Trump’s real estate buddy and his son-in-law) is destined to failure.
